Get to Tende by road

From Nice or Menton (direct via Ventimiglia):

Motorway A8 direction Genoa exit Ventimiglia
Direction Colle di Tenda (SS20)

Then Col de Tende (RN 204)

This is the easiest way, motorway along the coast then upstream the river Roya from its outlet in Ventimiglia to spring in Tende. Beautiful scenery along the winding valley with colourful plants and surprising rock structures! On the way a worthwhile glimpse at Saorge, remarkable semi-circular hill top village and Breil lakeside.

From Menton via Col de Brouis
       (scenic view, all in France, avoid winter) :

To Sospel (D2566)
Then to Breil sur Roya (D2204)
Then to Tende (RN 204)

This mountain road, in very good state, follows the old Salt Road, via Sospel and the Col de Brouis, mountain pass, and meets the Roya Valley in Breil. Fabulous panoramas (you can sometimes see Corsica) but you must appreciate the wonders of the unending hairpin bends and superb architecture!

From Cuneo :

To Limone-Piemonte (SS20)
Then to “Francia / Colle di Tenda” (SS20)

Then to Tende (RN 204)

This road is well known by the Piedmontese, who drive “al mare!” to the Côte d’Azur.

From the train, admire magnificent colours and various rock formation.

From Nice, Menton and Monaco (via Ventimiglia):

Nice / Menton / Ventimiglia line
Then Ventimiglia / Breil sur Roya / Cuneo (Torino) line

This is a very busy line, change at Ventimiglia.
Beautiful panoramas on the coast, then the Roya Valley. The railtrack is a work of art with 40 tunnels, suspended bridges from one side of the Roya River to another, and unique full circle tunnels to gain height.

Cuneo / Ventimiglia line

This Italian railways crosses the Piedmont plain and the Alps, runs down the Roya Valley to Ventimiglia.
