Between Provence and Italy...

Old historical village and cathedral

Cemetary stairs

Nestled in the Mercantour National Park – one hour from Menton or one and a half from Nice, Tende takes advantage of an exceptional geographical situation between French Riviera and Italian Piedmont and offers the hospitality of a double culture full of history and traditions.

The wizard rock engraving in the Valley of Merveilles

On leaving the village – pleasantly refreshed by running streams and average altitude (815 m) – Tende offers a mountain landscape with strings of lakes and green pastures. All this enhanced by the unique prehistoric open air rock face engravings at the foot of the Mount Bego, in the very famous 'Vallée des Merveilles' (Valley of Marvels)!

The crest line still displays signs of pastThe Central Fort wartimes and is studded with military forts and blockhouses, all connected by a network of paved paths. It can be peacefully visited, surrounded by the awe inspiring French and Italian-side steep slopes – separation for waters and climates.

A village with a rich and lively past

Obliged transit point on the 'Salt-Road' transporting the precious product to the Piedmontese towns like Milano or Torino, Tende aroused many desires: from Savoy, Provence, France or Italy. Tende was the last commune to join France in 1947.

Fountain and wash-houseThe medieval town still has all its charms – tiny sundrenched squares, narrow and often vaulted streets, running water in the many fountains and green stone wash-houses – but nevertheless keeps pace with everyday life.

The devoutness of the inhabitants shows up in the religious buildings: the magnificent collegiate church (cathedral) and preciously ornamented chapels – good examples of baroque art – take the visitor to the heart of the black or white Penitent orders.

Passionately kept traditions...

Saint-Eloi mule-day

House of Crafts & Traditions

In Tende we speak ‘Tendasque’, houses are decorated with typical local green stone and mules are promoted pets… Songs intermingle Italian Piedmont and Mediterranean polyphony showered with red and gold pompons and scarves.

Gnocchi and pasta can be white or green; chard pie can be sweet or salty; zucchini and acacia flowers are served up as delicious fritters – only for those who know…!

The sheep are 'Brigasque' (from La Brigue) and honey seeps from weird horse-shoe shaped hives, tools are polished by many years of hard work, the copper pot gently warming on the fire. The unique and incomparable charm awaits all lovers of traditional crafts!

Our patron saint: Saint Eloi, protector of mules and muleteers... that we celebrate every 2nd Sunday of July. And our shepherd-day is placed under Saint-Roch protection, every 2nd Sunday of August, when sheeps are going downtown!
